Friday is for Friends

Bob Roberts

photo-an_interview_with_bob_roberts.jpg

Bob Roberts called me Monday night, too late like usual. (Bob does too much GlocalTrekking to sleep normal hours.) He told me some exciting things, but if I told you, people would die (those of you who know Bob will get the humor). Bob is doing a new book on church multiplication and he was reminding me to finish the foreword (and I AM working on it, Bob).

Bob has already shown us how to be a megachurch pastor that gives yourself away... and he is a church planting fiend. Now, in his free time, he wades into the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Bob was recently interviewed for Christianity Today's Church Vision Project.

Drew Goodmanson

One of my favorite bloggers, except when he blogs things I tell him not to, is Drew Goodmanson.

Check out his post on Transforming Cities.

Ron Sylvia

ronbio.jpg

Ron Sylvia and I talked on Wednesday. Ron just took a month off to refocus his ministry... and he deserves it. We did a Purpose Driven Church Planting Conference at Liberty University in June and I could tell God was doing some stirring in his heart. Ron is one of the hardest working people I know... but his focus is on others in his work. Right now, they are looking for a teaching pastor at The Church at the Springs so Ron can dedicate half his time to coaching pastors. You can find more about Ron's coaching strategy here.

Steve Camp

scamp-prpic-sm.jpg

Steve Camp emailed me a few weeks ago about getting together for breakfast. We finally were able to do so this week. Honestly, I was a bit apprehensive. His blog has been a bit frightening as I been thrown under the bus a few times there in the comment section. :-)

But, there was no reason for apprehension... we had a great meeting and I appreciate his passion for the gospel. (One of my favorite features of his blog is "Your Weekly Dose of the Gospel.") Steve's music was very influential in my spiritual journey and you can find more of it here.

During breakfast, we talked some about Joel Osteen. And, Steve told me about this. I am impressed with the character of both men as evidenced by the initiative, exchange, and apology.

Philip Nation

My former co-pastor tells me I blog too much... not giving people a chance to think and comment upon things before I post the next. I think he is nuts, but I am open to your input. Of course, it is probably better than my former blogging practice-- posting once every three months.

Rob Plummer's New Book

419gsTb9XfL._AA240_.jpg

Mark Driscoll emailed and Daniel Montgomery called about Rob Plummer's new book, Paul's Understanding of the Church's Mission: Did the Apostle Paul Expect the Early Christian Communities to Evangelize? I knew Rob from my time as a professor at Southern Seminary and he is now on faculty there and also an elder at Sojourn Church.

JETS has a review that explains:

Did the apostle Paul expect the early Christian communities to evangelize? This is the subtitle of the book and also the central question that Plummer seeks to answer. Framed in another way, did Paul command the churches that he addresses in his epistles to imitate him in centrifugal missionary outreach? His answer, supported by lexical, exegetical, and logical argumentation, is a resounding affirmative. To some, Plummer's conclusion may seem obvious and thus the question hardly worth asking. However, the history of interpretation on this issue has been divided, and therefore a fresh look at the evidence is justified. Plummer makes the disturbing observation from his survey of the research that few books written by missiologists are informed by sound methods of biblical theology and, conversely, biblical scholars rarely interact with insights from missiologists. Surely this is a call to both groups for better integration of their respective disciplines.

Thanks Mark and Daniel, sounds great... BUT I CAN'T get a copy at Amazon. Ugh. Who can help a brother out?

New Friends from First Baptist of Hendersonville, TN

media%20planning.jpg

Starting September 9th, I will be preaching a new series at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, TN while their pastor recovers. The series will be called "Church Inside Out: Joining God in His Mission." I am exicted to be with these folks-- they have a great passion for their community. My family has already visited the church and greatly enjoyed it-- I am looking forward to the same.

We met at my house today for lunch and to plan the creative elements of the series. Almost everyone was helpful in the planning except a certain staff member...

...who has an iPhone that he used to take this picture, but none of that Mac creativity. :-)

Ed,

I just called the LifeWay store on campus (SBTS, that is). They currently have 18 copies of Dr. Plummer's book. It sells for $42 (steep because it is his dissertation). They put a couple on reserve for me, and I would be happy to get one to you. Just let me know (my email is in the address box).

Ed:

Thank you for the kind mention. I so enjoyed our time together and look forward to many more opportunities in the future.

BTW, that wasn't a bus you were thrown under, it was a mini-van :-).

The thing that I am most excited about, is that I feel like I have a new friend and yokefellow in ministry.

May the Lord continue to honor your faithfulness to Christ and His Word.

PS - Timmy or Ed, can you hold me one of Plummer's book as well? Where do I send my "love gift?"

By Ed Stetzer on August 24, 2007 10:20 PM

Timmy, emailing now. Thanks.

Steve, I think you are right... it felt smaller than a bus!

Steve (et al),

If you would like to contact LifeWay (SBTS), here's the number:

(502) 897-4506

I won't be on campus until Monday, so if you would like for me to personally reserve a copy, let me know.

Ed, figuring that you are LifeWay staff, you should get a nice discount, right? Oh wait, I think these Paternoster monographs are the ones with the "highlighter slash" (the non-discountable ones). Sorry.

It is good to be counted among such friends as Bob, Steve, Ron, and the rest.

Who needs 7 degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon? Apparently knowing you connects me to the entire population of the evangelical world.

And who needs the 7 degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon? Apparently knowing you connects me to the population of the entire known world. Grin.

Ed -- I really enjoy your blog! There is so much here to digest, good solid paradigm-shifting stuff. I like it! I only have one complaint. I agree with your former co-pastor... dude, you blog too much! :)

I can't keep up with you. I don't have time to read every day, so posts pile up and I often miss good stuff. There's no time to really digest all the good stuff you're giving me and perhaps comment before you move on to the next thing. I end up quickly scanning through posts or reading only the first few lines before moving on to the next one in order to get through all of them. Or I just don't read at all because I don't have time sift through the 10..15..20..24 (!) posts that Bloglines tells me you've racked up since my last read. Iiee-yaa!! Can you slow down a little?

Okay, I realize you probably can't (or won't). Just thought I'd ask --the old Amharic proverb, "You can't say 'yes' if I don't ask you." comes to mind. I also thought I'd let you know your former co-pastor isn't too far out in the weeds. ;)

By Travis K on August 30, 2007 8:13 AM

Ed - I'm in Louisville today at SBTS doing some research in the library. If you don't have Rob's book yet just shoot me an email and I'll pick one up. I'll be back in town tomorrow for the infamous Beech vs. Hendersonville football game. If you're not there then the people will not respect you in the pulpit at 1st in a few weeks - tread softly if you miss the game!
