I am back home now after yesterday's fall. Thanks for the prayers for the back... it is feeling somewhat better though I am not going in to the office this morning. In the meantime, it seems that alcohol is on the table lately. Last week it was my "quote" in the L.A. Times. Here is another place where it is cited. Uberblogger Todd Rhoades explains: Southern Baptists: Don't DrinkClick here for the rest of the story. And, be sure to check out the research here. It has an SBC sample, but also a Protestant one. I think it some helpful information. And, next to the headline, "Southern Baptist: Don't Drink" should be the phrase: "Breaking News: The Pope is Catholic." Grin. I am guessing that Todd's spelling skills have been impacted by his recent pub activities since "good budy" is urban slang for something else... but that is another story. (Please fix that Todd!) I'll correct my spelling error. It actually was typed quickly before I was fully awake this morning.
I would like to know how you knew that 'good budy' was urban for a homosexual truck driver though. Did you find that in your research as well? :)

Funny you should mention the Catholic church in the same breath as Baptists and Alcohol. I'd say both are reasonable examples of elevating tradition above the scriptures. No matter how good the tradition may be, it should not be confused with what the scriptures teach. Your statistics on the number of people who hold that any consumption of alcohol is contrary to scripture scare me. I can abstain from the use of alcohol, and I can encourage others to do the same, but I cannot say it is the only scriptural position. We have confused our traditions with our bibles.
I guess it depends on why they think Christians should not drink alcohol.
Some make the same argument for slavery that they do for alcohol-- and in both cases they would think that Christians should not do something even through the Bible nowhere says, "Thou shalt not."
