SBC President

Candidates include (in order they were announced):
1. Bill Waggner.
2. Frank Cox.
3. and Avery Willis makes three (posted with his permission).
...and watch for Johnny Hunt's forthcoming nomination from Ted Traylor (also posted here with permission). (Updated: Here is the official announcement for Johnny Hunt.)

It should be a good year with so many godly men interested in leading this convention through challenging times. Pray for God's direction and guidance. I believe that God can bring us together and focus us on His mission.

He would be a great president of the SBC.

By Brian Metz on May 6, 2008 1:21 AM

Thanks for lunch! I talked to a mutual friend today. Clint Clifton from Virginia said to write you a poem. Then explained to me how you dogged him out about writing you a poem. Good for you, Clint is such a woman.

Ed,

Hasn't Wiley Drake announced as well? :D

By Ed Stetzer on May 6, 2008 10:37 AM

If he did, I have not seen it. Do you have a link?

By M. Steve Heartsill on May 6, 2008 2:33 PM

Ed, here's a link from ABP about Wiley's announcement. I don't have a direct link to him or his church, but this might help.

By Ed Stetzer on May 6, 2008 2:35 PM

no link, Steve

By M. Steve Heartsill on May 6, 2008 2:36 PM

Would help to actually give you the link!

I see what you mean in the ABP story, but I can't find a formal announcment out there. Not sure how to handle that.

By Michael on May 6, 2008 3:08 PM

how about Mike Huckabee, I hear he's got some free time?

By irreverend fox on May 6, 2008 4:00 PM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Pastor Gary Fox (The Epicenter Church, Wadsworth, Oh) has announced that he will nominate Ed Stetzer of Lifeway Research for the office of President of the Southern Baptist Convention.

By Ed Stetzer on May 6, 2008 8:34 PM

Michael, Huckabee would be good... nice to have a guy with a sense of humor.

Gary, it would be a crazy day is that ever happened. But, honestly, I would not be interested. Besides, everyone seems to be running... I may be the only guy to vote.

By M. Steve Heartsill on May 7, 2008 7:51 AM

Maybe we should keep a list of who isn't running for SBC President! That list may be far shorter and easier to document!

By Michael on May 7, 2008 8:08 AM

Here are my top three reasons why Ed should be SBC President:
1) He doesn't want to be.
2) He's a normal guy who likes power tools, but unfortunately not sushi.
3) People follow and listen to Ed because they like and respect him, not because they are paid to do so.

Who's with me?

By Barry on May 7, 2008 2:34 PM

I second Michael's nomination!

By smurrell on May 8, 2008 12:45 PM

if they allow non-SoBaps to vote, then ed gets my vote. (if ed refuses the nomination, then it has to be ron paul - he was entertaining.)

By Michael on May 8, 2008 1:11 PM

Steve Murrell: If the voting were in Memphis, then anyone (alive or dead) could vote (see: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1541411/posts)

My SBC candidate litmus test: If you want the job, you are disqualified. The only people who should be considered are the ones who God would have to drag kicking and screaming to do it.

By Ed Stetzer on May 8, 2008 7:06 PM

Steve, the vote from a pentecostal megachurch pastor from the Phillipines will not help with my people. Grin.

And, thanks to all for the kind words.

By Shawn on May 28, 2008 9:28 AM

(I am not sure if this is a comment, it much more a question. It may not need to be posted, but answered. I am kind of unsure about the proper etiquette.)

Hello,

My name is Shawn Watson and I had the privileged of serving as your host at the Ohio Evangelism Celebration at the end of February. At this event you were very sick, but you were still able to totally distract Eric Geiger ruining his radio interview. While you were here we spoke briefly about the SBC Presidential election. We need a President who not only is committed to the Bible, but also is committed to being a missional leader who is concerned about keeping and developing young missional leaders. I fear that the SBC is, or is at least becoming, a none factor in kingdom work - at least in my state. I do not feel well informed enough to know which nominee for President would best reflect missional leadership that is open to the type of change that would excite and engage young and old leaders alike. Johnny Hunt is a force of nature who loves Jesus, missions, and seeing people saved, but he seems unlikely to bridge a gap from what is to what needs to be. Frank Cox seems like a very good man, but he seems to represent the old guard. Avery Willis is a spiritual giant, but is very old. I don't know anything at all about the other candidates. The potential names I heard from you don't even seem to be running. I believe this is a crucial time for important leadership. Do you have any thoughts you can share? I believe there are many others asking some of the same type of questions.

Thanks,

Shawn
