Last week, I began my series called "re:new" at Two Rivers. My focus was on how "seeking first the Kingdom" is key to renewed vision and focus. You can see the video and the notes here. This Sunday, I focused on a renewed focus on service and community from 1 Peter 4. You can watch the video here (and the notes are at the bottom): re:new- Renewed Focus on Community from Ed Stetzer on Vimeo.
In an environment of unity... (1 Peter 4:8-9) You Have a Gift ... God Intends You to Use... For Which He Empowers You... To Bring God Glory (1 Peter 4:10-11). 1. You Have a Gift (v. 10a) "Based on the gift they have received, everyone should use it to serve others," (1 Peter 4:10). "A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial" (1 Corinthians 12:7). 2. God Intends You to Use (v. 10b) "...as good managers of the varied grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10-11). "But now God has placed the parts, each one of them, in the body just as He wanted" (1 Corinthians 12:18). 3. For Which He Empowers You (v. 11a) "If anyone speaks, his speech should be like the oracles of God; if anyone serves, his service should be from the strength God provides," (1 Peter 4:11). 4. To Bring God Glory (v. 11b) "...so that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen" (1 Peter 4:11). "And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God's Son, growing into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ's fullness" (Ephesians 4:11-13). Awesome message Ed. I need to preach the same thing to our church (fbcespanola.com). Too many sitting in the wagon.
Ed, great message! I am enjoying watching how you lead this precious church in this pivotal season.
It was great to meet you in New Orleans last month. Thank you for your service to the church!
As long as you count ministry outside of the local church then I agree. My work right is in service to my extended family and a few friends that are in para-church ministry. I am nanny to my two nieces for 40-50 hours a week. Do consulting for church based non-profits (billed) about 12-15 hours a week and volunteer consult another 5 or so hours a week. My wife works at a high needs elementary school and works at least 50 hours a week serving her kids and the other teachers. We don't serve in our local church right now (although we have in the past).
I frequently still hear from people that I should be working in my church.
Very good stuff! Retweeting.
Thanks for the sermon and for your sacrificial service! My position as a bi-vocational pastor has required that I "hand-off" and "hand over" most of our Church's ministry to our members! Guess what? Our Church is growing! God bless you and TRBC.
Ed,
Two Rivers must not be used to using the "HBSC" version of the Bible...
Thanks for posting these sermon videos!
